Age: Edo period.
Remarks: This museum exhibition Gumbai or non folding fan is covered with gold lacquer gilt. It features a bold and rare kamon used by a Hachisuka Clan Daimyo. The gold lacquer has worn away a bit from age. This is the only Gumbai we have ever seen with this family crest on it. A remarkable find.
When you add the word "war" to anything, even something so seemingly harmless as a fan, you have to know that means trouble. Even before the courtly transformation, the military used Gumpai war fans on a regular basis. They were different than the collapsible, folding Tessen fans, rather being formed of one solid piece, strapped to a handle or staff. Most of these -- known as gumbai -- were round and stiff, and the rigid shaft that held the whole thing together resembled a dagger, only without a sharpened tip. Generally this type of fan also was used to denote senior military rank, carried only by army commanders. This piece would make a fine addition to any Samurai Armor collection. Please inquire for further details.
