Remarks: Wonderfully engraved iron gumbai.

The military class of ancient Japan used war fans, normally of the stiff, round (uchiwa) type which became known as gumbai. It is unknown as to when the "fly whisk" was replaced by the use of the gumbai but it was thought to have occurred during the Kamakura period in the 1300's. Uesugi Kenshin wielded one during a famous battle in 1563. The real height of popularity was in the mid 16th century.

Carried into battle by every group leader originally, the gumbai evolved into the special prerogative of only the commanding generals during the Tokugawa Period. During that time gumbai changed to feature bold colors, designs and heavy cords to denote the importance of the user and his clan affiliation. A final evolution saw the adding of family crests. Another highly popular design motif was the use of chinese astrology symbols.

This is gumbai is very rare as it represents a fine example of an earlier type made of iron. Not only was it used to command troops in battle but it was designed as a defensive weapon if needed.
