Myochin School Uchidashi Dou
"SOLD"
Age: Edo Period
Provenance: The Shogun Art Collection
Remarks: Some of the most skilled (uchidashi) embossing we have seen. Inlaid on the side and rear plates with gold and silver shi shi dogs and butterflies.
Although unsigned this work strongly reflects some of the characteristics of the work of Myochin Munesuke (1642-1735?). The almost three dimensional features of this Dou mirror other works of Munesuke in international museums including the Metroplitan Museum in New York.
Munesuke is identified as the 24th Myochin Master and is rated as Jo Jo I grouping him in the best 10% of all smiths. Munesuke is also known to have made many fine Suji and Hoshi Kabuto as well. Although he is not the first in the Myochin line to do this type of work he is considered by many experts to have been the best.
