"SOLD"
Age: Edo period.
Remarks:
The suit belonged to a Daimyo from Nobeoka (known as Kazusa province in the Edo period) in Kyushu. He had a 70,000 goku fiefdom. He lived during the Kansei era - 1789 - 1801. The Naito Han ruled Nobeoka for 123 years until the Meiji Restoration era.
The suit bears all the lavish trappings of a suit from the wealthy southern island. During the Edo period, the Naito family feudal lords were among the most trusted retainers of the Tokugawa Shoguns. Their residence in Edo (under the Sankin Kotai system) was a 150 acre estate which is now known as Shinjuku Gyoen. In 1871, after the Meiji Restoration, the family gave the grounds to the government, which -- not quite ready yet to have such gems at the disposal of ordinary people, made it an imperial property.
The suit itself is adorned with gold. The inside of the dou, kote, suneate, haidate, shikoro underside, etc. are all covered with gold. The wysteria crests are to be found all over the suit including the cloth. The kabuto is so-fukurin, so higaki with an amazing tehen and shinodare.
More details coming soon. For now...enjoy!
