Remarks:
The inscription on this famous piece reads "SAIKA YOSHIHISA" "KISHU MUNEHARU JU". Yoshihisa is the smith. An original matched set.
This Kabuto has been published in several armor publications and can been seen in the Wakayama City Museum book "Saika Kabuto No Sagaru", as well as pg.45 in "Spectacular Helmets of Japan 16th-19th Century". The is a very rare piece.
"It has long been a custom in Japan to use tengui, an oblong cloth having the standard lengths of some fourteen inches long and some twelve inches wide, for all kinds of utilitarian purposes from washcloth to head-band. This utilitarian helmet represents a tengui folded and placed on the top of the head, in a style that is typically worn in Japan. The construction of this helmet represents a departure in the manufacture and technology of late 16th century ironwork with the use of rivets to piece together the five iron plates. Helmets made in this way and patterned after the tengui were produced by armorers from Saika in the province of Kii."
