Daimyo Tessen

"SOLD"samurai kura

Age: Mid Edo period.

Remarks: During the long Tokugawa Shogunate (1616 - 1867), Japan was divided into fiefs which were presided over by feudal lords known as Daimyo (dime-yo)- which literally translated means, "great name". The Daimyo were divided into two groups based on their relationship with Iwyasu Tokugawa, the founder of Japan's last great feudal house. In the first group were those who had been allied with Ieyasu before the battle of Sekigahara in 1603. The second group was made up of those who had opposed him or were neutral.

This is a beautiful mid Edo Tessen owned by a Daimyo by the name of Kazusa Kururi. His 'fiefdom' was 30,000 Goku (rice barrels) and his province was in the Kanto region (present day greater Tokyo area). The two metal end 'sections' carry his mon in gold and silver. The interior of the Tessen has a wonderful depiction of a cherry blossom tree and a sun motif along with an inscription by a Zen priest. The cord is also original to the mid Edo period. This is a rare original condition item we would consider of museum quality.
