Age: Momoyama-Early Edo period. (16th-17th century)
Remarks: The suit belonged to a Daimyo of the Yanagisawa Clan. Documents regarding the Daimyo and his family are included and pending translation. Recently purchased from a famous Japanese collection. This suit represents the finest craftsmanship of the period and is one of the finest in the world.
This superb authentic example of a Edo Period suit has qualified for the prestigious level of Juuyo Bunka Shiryou by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozan Kai Armour Society here in Japan. This is the highest level of certification a Samurai Armor can obtain before it becomes designated a National Treasure item.
Historical: Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu (1658-1714) was a member of theTokugawa Shogunate. He served Tokugawa Tsunayoshi from an early age, becoming his washasu and eventually rising to the position of soba yonin. He was the Daimyo of the Kawagoe Han, and later of the Kofu han; he retired in 1709. Having previously been named Yasuakira, he received a kanji from the name of the shogun, and came to call himself Yoshiyasu. Yanagisawa played a pivotal role in the matter of the 47 Ronin episode.
