NKBHK Papered Shiroge Ue Usagi Nari Kabuto with matching Menpo
Edo period (1615-1869), 18th century.
A Shiroge [White hair] kabuto with wakidate [side crests] in the shape of rabbits ears dating to the early Edo period. Most likely a zunari type hachi [bowl] covered with fur with the mabizashi [peak] in cha urushi nuri [brown lacquer]. The helmet boasts a classic five lame shikoro in the Hineno style laced with silk moegi [light green] colored lacing in the sugake [spaced lacing] style.
The matching reset menpo, in tetsu sabiji nuri lacquer [russet iron style] complete with moustache and four lame tare [throat guard] and moegi [light green] colored lacing in the sugake [spaced lacing] style.
The kabuto and menpo set have been awarded ’Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo’ grade by the NKBKHK (The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor, which is the most trusted Japanese armor appraising society in Japan).
