An unusual Kawari Kabuto dating to the Edo period.
Iron bowl with applied tail fin section in leather covered with kuro urushi tatami nuri [black lacquer with a crinkled appearance]. The smooth black lacquer of the tail fin contrasting with the rough surface of the bowl. Prominent mayu [eyebrows] rising low on the mabizashi [peak]. Gilt copper fukurin [trim] running along the mabizashi [turnbacks] and peak. A five-lame black-lacquered neck guard [hineno-jikoro] in black lacquer with kon-ito odoshi [blue silk lacing] in sugake [spaced lacing] style. Helmet liner present and intact.
